MLS NEXT Pro Top-5-ranked North Texas SC remained undefeated following its 3-1 comeback-win over Colorado Rapids 2 at Choctaw Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Despite Rapids 2 forward Dantouma Toure opening the scoring for the visitors in the 35th minute, North Texas responded with three-unanswered goals to win the game.
The first came in the closing minutes of the first half as midfielder Blaine Ferri converted a penalty to level the game at 1-1 heading into the break. The home side then snatched the lead seven minutes into the second half after forward Hope Avayevu followed up and buried a rebound in the box. North Texas slammed the door on Rapids 2 as forward Bernard Kamungo added to the lead in the 77th minute with an electric run and decisive finish to make it 3-1.
Both teams looked to capitalize on their shootout wins last week with three points, but the Western Conference bout saw North Texas continue its winning form in its first three games. As for Rapids 2, the team from Colorado looks to rebound from its first MLS NEXT Pro loss against Minnesota United FC 2 next week.
Avayevu and Kamungo extended their stellar form in front of goal as the African-born duo have 3 goals and 2 assists in three games for North Texas SC.
Avayevu scored his first MLS NEXT Pro goal in NTSC’s win over Rapids 2 and added to his assist tally with one to Kamungo in the 77th minute. The 19-year-old forward is a Ghana native and began his soccer career in his homeland before making his professional debut last year for North Texas in USL League 1.
Kamungo scored again, giving him goals in consecutive games for the Tanzania native. The 20-year-old forward and his family lived in a refugee camp before relocating to the U.S. After moving, Kamungo impressed at a North Texas tryout and made his debut for the club last year in USL League 1, scoring five goals in 22 appearances.
